Foundations for technique

This stage introduces rotation kick to build the foundation for freestyle technique and hip rotation. Swimmers also develop backstroke streamline and butterfly kick, learning the body positions that set them up for success in future stroke work. These skills prepare members for the advanced techniques introduced in Stage 7 and beyond.

Skills to Achieve

  • Perform a 7-8 metre backstroke kick with arms by your side
  • Complete 8 metres with a streamline backstroke kick
  • Swim 8 metres with a streamline freestyle kick, including one roll to the back for a breath
  • Perform an 8 metre rotation kick to build hip movement
  • Achieve a 4 metre butterfly kick to introduce body rhythm
  • Swim 8 metres using one arm freestyle for breathing
  • Begin with a drop start, streamline underwater and steer up confidently
